Hi Michael,

1. Since IFC and BIMXML are different file types, there would be a difference in how you import them into ArchiCAD. You would not be able to simply "open" the BIMXML as you would an IFC file into ArchiCAD. Currently, you would have to use IFC if you want to go from OPS to ArchiCAD.

2. Same answer as #1.

[BIMstorm New Orleans] Re: Presentations

Stan

New Orleans was a different animal that LAX. We focused on the Conference at Fiatech in New Orleans and the presentation. We also decided to keep the group smaller, there was less support that LA to see what the teams can do. At the same time we are building up for future BIMstorms.

One very interesting outcome of New Orleans was the work that the National Capital Planning Commission from Washington DC submitted. We were expecting more of an observer role, since they did not have any experience in BIMstorm, and out of the blue a project was submitted that demonstrated a workflow we have been hoping for. They took one of the program requirements for a museum, and continued work in Skethcup and Revit, then posted it back to BIMStorm. This illustrates that there is no linear path, and that not everyone needs to know all the tools. Focusing on the need to generate a good solution, regardless of the tools, helped to highlight the process shift that is possible.

You can see some of the work on this here:
http://www.onuma.com/services/BostonStorm.php
on Project #2, we hope to extend this process out in Boston.
see also here on slide 16-17

The level of excitement and enthusism of the teams can only be generated by the participants.

One thing for sure is that there are a lot of building owners looking in on this process to see what teams are out there that can support this new process.

Did you see your name mentioned in Cadalyst?
http://onuma.com/short.php?s=qkkhgim2

Looking for the next storm....

Not sure what it was regarding this BIMStorm but the excitement level was less and the communication was less. Was on a team that only communicated with one time regarding a spreadsheet program they have created. Not sure what was presented but we only had some sites selected and were just starting to create when April 1st had arrived. Will continue to develop some more ideas and place them on the site over the next weeks.

Hope some common issues may have come to the fore with some of the new users and the interface hurdles.

Regards,

Hi Kimon,

What I'm trying to work on is the information spaces.

I have just started talking with Finith Jernigan at Design Atlantic about the fire stations. He says they will "assist me in evaluating how the fire station(s) fit." They landed multiple stations in New Orleans that actually represent two projects. One is a design concept with no additional information added after pre-schematics, the other is a built station they are using as a placeholder/demonstration of possibilities. The second project includes a fairly complete model and that has been evaluated with interoperable tools. The second project is what I will start with.

The task is filling in blanks, identifying a performance oriented basic set of specification sections that could describe any building, and looking carefully at their designs to avoid making too many unfounded assumptions. I hope to link up with an MEP specialist to better define MF21 to 29 in the chart attached and to select sample systems for sample buildings. I am also going to meet with someone at ICC to talk about mapping codes into the attached (right side blanks) based on building type. For example, the PDFs for Fire Station Template and Fire Station Compact, are OCCS 11 13 11 31 Fire Station which would lead to a smaller set of codes than another type of building.

I am interested in Design Atlantic's first project too and can clearly see why UniFormat is the best classification system when spatial, use, and building type issues are the main questions. Ex: Does the Owner's program fit the site?

In general, as an information space, I imagine this expanding as the design gets further along. Starting compact in UniFormat which matches up properly with the spaces generally. Next, there is a method in OmniClass called delimiters where a set of standard keyboard symbols are used to combine parts of tables for more precise description. This same set of symbols can be used to bridge from UniFormat to MasterFormat when a design progresses from Concept to Construction Documents. OCCS would be another extension from MasterFormat using the same CSI and OCCS recommended protocols to distribute and keep certain parts of a BIM once the buildings turn over to the Owner.

In general, if the fire station can work, then I will be ready to connect with a cultural center and park to get this base map more solid, by the next BIMstorm maybe there will be a way to work more directly from the spaces shown, to what their performance requirements would be if actually built.

Quick Report from BIMStorm New Orleans

Thanks to all who participated.
I was at the Fiatech Conference Last week presenting BIMStorm New Orleans as it happened.
We presented on April 1, and were at the BIMStorm booth throughout the duration of the conference.
Finith Jernigan from Design Atlantic presented in the morning of April 1, landing fire stations in New Orleans. Dianne Davis and I presented after lunch. Steve Hagan who was scheduled to present with us, could not make it, so we presented on his behalf of the "owner's" perspective. Throughout the entire period, we were watching the projects evolve and presenting them to the attendees.

We are heading toward having a series of presentations about BIMStorm New Orleans with a wrap up on the April 18, 2008 webinar.

We are collecting team workflow graphics. If each team would like to submit an overview set of slides, one would be fine, or more if you like. Here is an example:

has an interesting example of a workflow.

Slides #16-#17 are from the National Capital Planning Commission in Washington DC. They jumped into BIMStorm New Orleans at the last minute and produced an impressive amount of design work. They started in OPS and picked up on a museum program, that shows on Slide 16 as angled blocks. Then they created a concept of a "wave" design, in sketch and also in Sketchup.IFC files were exported from OPS of the program requirements and then imported to Revit, for further detail. This was then resolved in Revit and SketchUp and posted back to OPS as native file attachments, in Revit, JPEG, Sketchup format. The key piece here is that the program requirement came from OPS as a "client request" for a museum, and then it went on to be resolved in other programs after being exported from OPS.
