Workflows
Posted by: Kimon (IP Logged)

Topic to discuss and support the various workflows. There are groups invovled that include:

Architects
Planners
Owners, Developers
GIS Analysts
Economists
Emergency Services
Real Estate Specialists
Facility Management
Operations and Maintenance
Codes
Energy
Cost Estimators

The goal is to flow information across a wide range of these groups, in as close to real time as possible and to simulate real world planning and life cycle scenarios for a large urban area in a short time period. A big task, and one that we know will be interesting to witness. We will all learn from it, both what did work and what did not. The point is that "it is happening" and we are glad everyone is joining in. This topic will discuss workflows and how they will be supported by people, processes and technology. Let us know your thoughts and questions.

Editors and Analysts
Posted by: Kimon (IP Logged)
Date: January 26, 2008 06:19PM

Planners, Architects, and engineers will be creating design solutions that will be posted in the BIMstorm. They will have teams creating scenarios and designing them in BIM, OPS and other tools. The project requirements could start from an owner requesting a building in a form such as this:http://onuma.com/products/BimRequests.php
Or posting an Excel file with program areas.
These requirements would then be taken by a team to start the analysis and design.
When the designs are visible to the BIMStorm players, they can continue to refine it, from their own perspective. An architect may continue to analyze how it fits on a site. As an "editor" the architect or planner can change the configuration of a building.

Emergency responders, may look at it from the perspective of how they will support the shifting demographics and structures in the area. They need to get access to information about the building, but not necessarily edit it directly. They may want to comment on the design as it happens.

There are many offices and individuals involved in this process, and for the purposes of the BIMStorm, we have allowed the access to information be more on the open side to be able to support he rapid development and design in a short time period with many people.

Analysts also need to get access to the designs as they evolve. For example, we have economists from Whitestone Research who will be looking at the designs in the early stages, to forecast operations and maintenance cost for 20 years. Typically this is done after projects get further along in the design cylce. We want to do them earlier to be able to react to and allow design changes to support more sustainable solutions.

This topic will discuss some of the workflows for specific groups supporting the overall goal of integration, and sustainable decision making.

Analysts will have several levels of access depending on their role.

There will have project information live:

1 - Directly into OPS,
as either an editor or a viewer. Editors, have the right to create and edit their own projects, and view shared projects. Viewers have the right to see shared projects and attach comments to projects and schemes.

For example, the Whitestone Research team will have access to OPS as Viewers. They will be able to see all the projects as thy are completed and post comments as text to the specific project, or attach a resulting report for operations and maintenance to the project.

Log into OPS is here:
https://www.onuma.com/products/OpsLogin.php
and requires an account or OPS Trial Run account. If you have been prequalified to play, and have not received your account please let us know.

2. BIM Reports
On this web site:
http://onuma.com/products/BimReports.php
is a separate real time view of the projects as they are posted. The default view on this page is to sample projects. With the User Group: BIMstorm LAX, you will see the projects that are part of the BIMStorm LAX. You need a password to access this. If you have signed up for BIMstorm and would like to view these reports, please let us know.

The types of reports are:
- Cost Summary per bldg.
- Cost summary per site, with multiple buildings
- Energy Calculation per bldg.
- Energy Calc per Site
- List of spaces by name, area, capacity

Aggregated report of multiple schemes by selecting a checkbox next to the name and scrolling to the bottom of the page and selecting, "view report" of selected sites. IFMA /BOMA reports of rentable space will also be available for projects that have designated space using these standards.

BIM Gallery of uploaded reports, images and other files, that are shared.

Google Earth export to view the buildings and data in 3d on Google Earth.

3. Web Feature Service
http://onuma.com/products/WfsCatalog.php
Has an overall map view of projects. The default view shows sample projects. The BIMStorm LAX projects will be in User Group: BIMStorm LAX, Password: see #2 above
This site has the added feature of Google Earth Network Links, which are small pointer files to user selected projects that will update in real time as projects change. There is a selection box on the left side, that you can check off projects you would like to subscribe to and then scroll to the bottom of the page to download a small network link file to open in Google Earth. There are three options to subscribe to in Google Earth:
a- Floor Slabs Only ( good for looking at many buildings at once, for faster loading if you just want to see overall massing )
b- Incl. Spaces - Buildings with spaces and slabs. Good for more detail. Depending on the processor speed of your machine, the number of buildings you can handle will change. With newer machines, 20-30 buildings with space level data should work.
c-Zoning only. Brings in slabs to desribe the site area of each project. If there is zoning height info included this will also be exported.

A strategy on the network link is you can save various sites, and combinations of level of detail, on your desktop as pointers. These become a kind of "formula" of what you would like to subscribe to. As the teams work on their projects, these network links stay active and go and grab the latest designs on cue or at fixed intervals, set by you.

Export to BIM. From this page you can also export IFC files of individual projects to import to other BIM applications such as Archicad, Revit, VectorWorks, and other IFC compliant applications.

CityGML for export to Open Geospatial Consortium standards.

Excel XML for a list of furniture if it is specified in the building.

Rapidly Creating an Urban Scale Plan
Posted by: Kimon (IP Logged)
Date: January 27, 2008 12:00PM

OPS has a new feature added today to import building footprints from Google Earth to the OPS site. This takes a process that used to be over 20 min. and shrinks it down to minutes. Information on how to do this is here:

http://onuma.com/forum/read.php?3,9,196#msg-196

For the BIMstorm workflow this allows teams to rapidly use Google Earth to visualize context and add new buidings or reference adjacent buildings that will impact their design. It is also a rapid way of building up a massing model of areas in Google Earth that do not have existing 3d Models, and a way to use Google Earth as a "sketching" tool for new ideas prior to importing them to OPS for more detailed analysis and design. More to follow.

Attaching Comments and Files
Posted by: Kimon (IP Logged)
Date: January 27, 2008 07:42PM

OPS Editors and Viewers can attach comments and files to any level in their scheme. Site, Floor, Space, and these comments and files will show up in an attachment report, based on where they were attached. OPS users can comment or attach to any scheme that is shared with the studio, regardless of it is your own. This is the only editing that is possible on schemes that are shared but not owned by you.

Attachments can also be shared with BIM Reports to viewers who do not have direct access to OPS.

This method will be used to allow analysts to view projects that are shared and comment on them or attach other reports related to the project.

In OPS, on the upper left is an attachment button.

A description on the process has been added as a PDF help file here:
http://www.inteltect.com/transfer/OPSAttachmentHowTo.pdf

New animation for how to attach comments and files posted here:

http://onuma.com/plan/helpfiles/Attachments/

This describes how analysts such as Whitestone would attach their reports, to a specific scheme. Or how owners of the scheme would attach comments and files to their own schemes. Owners of the schemes need to make their scheme "shared" to allow others to attach comments and files.

A new animation on how to share schemes and view schemes and reports is here:

http://onuma.com/plan/helpfiles/SharingSchemes/

For BIMstorm LAX, teams need to share their schemes to be visible.

Re: Sharing and Viewing Schemes

Date: January 28, 2008 11:30AM

New feature added today to OPS.
When sharing a scheme to BIM Reports or Web Services, the pulldown now has designations for each team. A-Z. Each team should use their team name when sharing.

Three other categories:
Training - How to files and templates
Support - Supporting data and projects
Parcels - Will be used to store parcel data

If you team is not listed here, please let us know. This will allow filtering of schemes by team in the BIM Reports using the Group Pulldown:

http://onuma.com/products/BimReports.php

If you are a player that needs access to the reports and do not have a password, please let us know.

Building Settings
Posted by: Kimon (IP Logged)
Date: January 28, 2008 04:33PM

In Building Settings there are several new features.

1. Building Type - Pull Down to define building type based on the International Building Code - ICC, and a link to the ICC info. Copyrighted material. Reprinted with permission of ICC®.

2. # of Units, Residential, Hotel Hospital. This is not linked to the spaces, but will show up in reports. This could be filled in even in early stages of design, to define program requirements. For example 400 hotel rooms. These numbers will be totalled across multiple buidlings.

3. Gross area calculation method. Using two options. Actual spaces x a multipler for early design, OR based on the floor slab, as design progresses or is an existing building the footprint of the slab defines gross area.

4.Custom Factor; Multiplier times, the net area of spaces. This is user defined, and defaults at 1.2 x

5. Energy use per are to get kWh per year.

IFMA BOMA Calculation of Space show up on BIM Reports
http://onuma.com/products/BimReports.php
Note the buildings that do NOT have OSCRE codes set will not do an IFMA BOMA Calc.

Report will look like this:

IFMA BOMA.jpg

IFMA BOMA Space Calc and OSCRE
Posted by: Kimon (IP Logged)
Date: January 28, 2008 05:02PM

If you fill in the OSCRE Codes in the OPS Excel Template on import to OPS, the spaces will be classified in a way that automatically generates a space calc based on IFMA BOMA standards. Rentable areas etc.

OSCRE.jpg

Will result in a report like this:

http://onuma.com/forum/file.php?2,file=51,in_body_attachment=1

On the BIM Reports Page:
http://onuma.com/products/BimReports.php

See attached OSCRE Space Classification Stadards. The four digit code is what needs to be entered into the OPS Template per space.

Kimon,

We are trying to duplicate sites and projects. The Project: (Please select project) does not populate. When we press the 'Proceed' button it returns: Please select project.

Unfortunately there is nothing to select. Shouldn't it connect to the project list and templates?

HELP!

Kimon,

Have you resolved how to best attach timeframe to models and how to best extract planning data at timeframes that will be consistent across all teams.

We know how to get data from the posted projects. We just don't know how to get the 5/10/15/20 year metrics from the main planning schemes. Right now it seems as though it is a matter of selecting everything.

Since some sites will have multiple projects going on at the same time and I suspect that many will not include timing in their models, how do we control this?

We need numbers for additional population, increased square footage by type (residential/commercial/insitutional will do) and dwelling units tied to a time frame that is consistent. With these figures we can project the rest.

Re: Workflows

Time frame is controlled by:
Settings > Building Settings > Cost Settings >

section 2 - Escalation to Mid Point of Construction > pull down on year

Population is entered in:
Building Settings > Enter residential or other units here.
* note this is not linked at the moment to the actual spaces in the plan, and is more of a required number of units or an as built number of units.

These unit calcs then show up in:

Software List
Posted by: Kimon (IP Logged)

Can We all start a master list of Software that is used in BIMStorm and how the exchanges of data happened between the different tools and for what purpose. For example:

Revit Architecture to Revit Structure - Through RVT format
Archicad to Revit Structure - Through IFC
OPS to Archicad - IFC

It would be great if each team can keep a master list of sofware and workflows. We want to show maximum use of tools in BIMstorm.

As you all know this is going to be published in NBIMS magazine and one focus will be on process.

I will start the list here.

New settings added at Building Settings - Buildings

From Before: define building type based on ICC

# of Residential Units, is required for all BIMstorm projects to get population counts and to trigger Emergency Services, fire station response.

# of Shelter Units is a new field. How many people can you house in case of an emergency? # of beds. For example a high school may be able to sleep 300 in the gymnasium.

These numbers will show up in the BIM Reports.

Number of floors is automatically created from the model

Access info for viewing BIMReports on the BIMStorm LAX. Password has been emailed to all that have registered here:
http://www.onuma.com/services/BimStormRegistration1.php

For players with OPS access , this is separate from your log in to edit projects. This is intended for viewing projects.

The password is: XXXXXX < Emailed individually to all

There ware TWO sites to access info with this:

1 - The BIM Reports Page
http://onuma.com/products/BimReports.php

User Groups:
BIMstorm LAX -- All projects submitted by all Teams
BIMstorm LAX Support - Supporting projects, relating to all teams
BIMstorm LAX -(team) - Team specific projects
OPS Training - Sample Projects

The password for the above was sent via email to registered participants.
Select "Display List of Sites"
this will filter based on your selection. You can continue to change filters without having to enter the password.

A list of sites and buildings show up. You can select individual reports, OR select multiple sites, by clicking box on left and at the very bottom of the page are aggregated reports. You can also download individual Google Earth files.
The BIM Gallery link is to any attached files, PDF etc to that project.
The mail icon on the left, you can send a direct message to the owner of that scheme.

2 - OPS Web Feature Service (WFS)
http://onuma.com/products/WfsCatalog.php

User Groups: Same as #1 above
Map view shows location of projects
List view below shows projects

Similar functionality to #1 with a different type of data available. More technical in nature.
IFC FIles for Import to BIM
GML for City GML Import
KML for Open in Google Earth
Excel XML is listing of furniture if defined

Check mark on left lets you select multiple Schemes, and scroll to bottom of page and save a 'Network Link" Google Earth file
that will "stream" the projects direct form OPS into Google Earth.

Three options for streaming.
1. Standard is just Floor Slabs of Building, (no spaces) recommended for larger city models
2. Include Spaces (more detailed with spaces) recommended for limited number of models, not for the entire city. Speed of rendering in Google Earth will depend on your processor.
3. Zoning extruded heights. Just blocks or sites, with no buildings, color coded and with max height if defined.

These network link files are like recipes that can be saved. Once you download the initial KMZ file which is very small, 4K even for multiple buildings and load them into Google Earth, it will look at the server and stream the projects in. Depending on the number of projects you choose and your network speed, the time will vary for streaming them in.

See this post:
http://onuma.com/forum/read.php?2,246,264#msg-264
As of today (1/30/08) , the projects streaming in on this are all test projects. Tomorrow the real projects will start to show up.

Note to Teams:
We encourage each team to put data in that will show up in the reports.

Kimon - can you get info to Whitestone Research re: green roofs. Imoprtant to look at economic benefits for whole site - not only ROI on each bldg envelope, but big picture - reduction in overall ambient temp by 2ºC = 10% increse in energy efficiency - across the board. Also, green roofs across site will reduce peak demand. Roofs don't have to be replaced - 50 yrs+ and will see gains in smog reduction, increase in health benefits - lots to calculate. Have them contact me -

Hi Karen,

We'll take a look at incorporating some of your comments into our models. It would help to have a little more information:

1. Annual preventive maintenance cost vs. a regular roof?
2. Any other differences between upkeep of a green roof and a regular roof?
3. Any special skills required to maintain/replace a green roof?
4. Why specifically does a green roof last 50+ years? Difference in materials? Different maintenance cycle?
5. Can you cite direct us to any green roof manufacturers who might have empirical data for any of the above?

We pretty much concentrate on the building envelope and grounds. We won't take into account things like smog reduction and and health benefits. We can try to put something together so that we can do a quick financial analysis on the benefits of a green roof.

Thanks.
